Travel information

Accommodation
A number of room blocks in hotels in the center of Heidelberg are allocated for NIC XI. You can choose from these pre-reserved rooms by making a reservation via the registration form. Select a price category, and then a list of the hotels and the rooms that are still available will appear. The hotel reservations are handled by UniTT, an event management company belonging to the University of Heidelberg. If you have any questions concerning hotel reservations, please contact Ms. Kirsten Vöhl, e-mail: kirsten.voehl (AT) zuv.uni-heidelberg.de; phone: ++49-6221-54 37 47.

Airports
The international airport closest to Heidelberg is Frankfurt (FRA), at a distance of 82 km. The most convenient way to go from FRA to Heidelberg is by shared door-to-door shuttle offered by TLS. A round trip is 66 Euros per person. It usually takes about one hour to get to Heidelberg, but it strongly depends on traffic and on how many persons the shuttle is shared with.

Trains of the Deutsche Bahn depart from Frankfurt Flughafen about every hour. If the train is not delayed and you do not miss the connection in Mannheim, where you have to change from the ICE to the S-Bahn (suburban train), the trip takes 52 minutes. A return ticket costs 49 Euros. A taxi from Heidelberg main station to the old town is another 10-15 Euros. Alternatively, you can either take the Straßenbahn (1.50 Euros per trip) to "Bismarckplatz" or continue with the S-Bahn to "Heidelberg Karlstor". From these stations it is a 10-15 minutes walk to the center of the old town.

Other airports in the vicinity of Heidelberg are Stuttgart (STR; distance 120 km), and Mannheim (MHG; distance 15 km; domestic flights to a few German cities only).

ATMs
ATMs can be found at airports, train stations, and at many banks in Heidelberg. Most of the major credit cards are accepted.

Credit cards
The major credit cards are accepted in most larger shops and restaurants, but usually not in small shops or supermarkets. It is therefore advisable to carry at least a small amount of cash.

Currency
The official currency of Germany is the Euro (currency converter).

Electricity
Like in most European countries, electricity is supplied in Germany at voltage of 220 to 230 volts and a frequency of 50 Hz. Two-wire-plugs are used (see electricity world standards and look for socket type C and F).

Exchange
Money can be exchanged at almost all banks. Exchange offices can also be found at airports and the larger train stations, e.g. Heidelberg main station. The opening hours of ReiseBank AG at Heidelberg main station are Monday-Friday 07.30 am-08:00 pm; Saturday 09.00 am-05:00 pm; Sunday 09.00 am-01.00 pm.

Visa
Please check with a German embassy in your country what the visa requirements are in your case. If you need a letter of invitation, please contact the LOC by e-mail: nic2010 (at) lsw.uni-heidelberg.de.

Weather
In July the weather in Heidelberg is usually very sunny with little rain. Typical temperatures are 25-30 degrees Celsius during daytime, and 15-20 degrees Celsius during the night. During the summer we occassionally have heavy thunderstorms, hence it is recommended to bring an umbrella or a light, water-tight jacket.
