Multiwavelength Coverage

Most sources of TeV emission will have counterparts in other wavelength regimes. A physical description of these sources needs to take the characteristics of the sources in all parts of the electromagnetic spectrum into account. Multiwavelength studies are important to identify sources, determine their distances, spectral energy distributions, and other properties. Observations in other parts of the spectrum become especially important in variable sources, where multiwavelength coverage needs to be simultaneous.

The aim of this working group is to ensure that multiwavelength observations of H.E.S.S. targets are carried out, to establish and maintain efficient communications with observatories and instruments covering other (lower energy) portions of the electromagnetic spectrum, and to provide a point of contact for researchers working in other wavelength regimes.

Multifrequency observations and Monitoring of AGN

Multiwavelength campaigns of TeV blazars with Cherenkov telescopes, X-ray satellites and other ground-based observatories have been carried out frequently in the past.

• Several campaigns on Mrk 421 including the Whipple telescope are described here. One of the earliest campaigns (see here for the publication) included optical monitoring by the LSW Heidelberg .
• A HEGRA campaign on Mrk 421 is described here.
• Campaigns on Mrk 501 including the Whipple telescope are described here.
• Also the TeV blazar 1ES 1959 has been monitored in multifrequency campaigns.
