Astro-lab Winter term 2011/2012

New (as of Oktober 15 2012): Since the phsyics-lab for Bachelor students in their 3rd semester is planned at exactly the same dates as the ones planned for the astro-lab and in order to allow as many as possible Bachelor students in their 3rd semester to take part at both - the astro-lab and the physics-lab - we decided to change the dates for the astro-lab from February 13 - 24 to February 6 - 17. However, due to space limits, we can offer only 25 Bachelor in their 3rd semester a participation in the astro-lab during the first week (6 - 10. February). Hence we ask Bachelor students in their 3rd semester only, to register for that week. Registration for the first round of observations closes now on October 26. It is unfortunetaly not possible to postpone the astro-lab to March.

Important note: As part of the astro-lab to be held from February 6 - 17 2012, observations will be carried out with the 70cm telescope of the Landessternwarte Heidelberg. Since weather is normally pretty poor in February, the observations will be performed during the lecture period in the Winter-term 2011/2012 normally Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday. Meeting point for the observations ist the entrance of the Landessternwarte. You may come up either by own car or using the bus nr. 39 at 15h (if observations start at 15.30h) or 16h (if observations start at 16.30h) from the Bismarkplatz. The observations will last 4-5hrs. Return for participants without car 28min after full hour each using the "Ruftaxi" (free of charge if you have a "Semesterticket" or 1,50 Euro otherwise). Arrangements will be made via the assistant. In case not all participants werde able to conduct their observations during the dates offered (e.g. due to bad weather), we will arrange further observing sessions in January 2012.

HowTo: Pls. register online as detailed below. Than pls. indicate via DOODLE all dates, where you would be available for an observing evening. Based on the number of participants and their availability, we will than build groups of 4 or 6 observers with fixed dates for the observations. Pls. urgently give your cell phone number (if you have one) when registering. At the day of the observations you are scheduled for, you will be called (or get a SMS) by the assistant in charge between 13h and 14h. If you do not receive anything on that day, no observations will be carried out (weather).

Pls. register until October 26 2011 for built-up of the first observing groups. On October 27 you will find here than the date of your observing evening. This information will also be circulated via E-Mail.

You can also register after October 26. Once the first round of scheduled observations is over, new dates for the unsuccessfull groups will be defined as well as observing dates for the participants who have registered after October 26. The assignment of the dates will always been made based on the DOODLE entries.

The assistants for the observations are Julian Stürmer , Tel. 06221-541773 and/or Trifon Trifonov , Tel. 06221-541722.

Preparation and outline of the observations: Pls. download the script for the observations here . For the evening pls. go through part 1 and 2 of the script and solve the questions. At the begin of the evening you will first get an introduction to the telescope and the CCD-camera by the assistant followed by a discussion on whawt you have done for the preparation of the evening (parts 1 and 2 of the script). Than the observations follow. The data taken during the night will be reduced and analysed as part of the astro-lab in February (part 3 of the script).

Pls. have warm clothes with you. It can be very cold at the Königstuhl during the night.

Since it is unclear at present how many participants would like to take part in the astro-lab in February (and hence need to observe) we scheduled 2 weeks in February by now. Since the capacity of the room, where the astro-lab will be held is limited, we may offer an additional week. Alternatively you can shift your participation on the astro-lab to autumn 2012 (to be held from October 1 - 12, 2012). The observations will than be carried out during that period (weather is normally pretty good during this time of the year). In addition, there are not so many participants in autumn, i.e. this is a convenient alternative.

In case of questions and/or inconsitencies pls. contact Jochen Heidt via E-Mail or phone (06221-541704).

  • Procedure: There is no special preparation for the astro-lab required. During the one-week astro-lab about 4-5, during the 2-week astro-lab about 9-10 tasks shall be worked on in groups of two (scripts will be given on site). Individual tasks will be assigned by the organizers. Once a task is completed by an individual group, it will be discussed with one of the responsible assistants. There is no need for a written summary or any homework.

  • Literature: It would be useful to bring your own textbooks, e.g.
