Astro-lab Winter term 2013/2014



Important note: As part of the astro-lab observations will be carried out with the 70cm telescope of the Landessternwarte Heidelberg. Since weather is normally pretty good in October, they will be taken throughout the course.


Astro-lab staatsexamen, diploma and PhD students: September 30 - October 11, 2013

Astro-lab Bachelor students WPAstro3:

Alternatively September 30 - October 5 or October 7 - 11 2013.

Dates: Monday, September 30 through Saturday, October 5 2013, full day, starts at 9:15 AM daily. Since October 3 is a public holiday, no astro-lab will be held on that day.

Dates: Monday, October 7 through Friday, October 11 2013, full day, starts at 9:15 AM daily


Astro-lab Master students MVAstro1:

Alternatively September 30 - October 5 or October 7 - 11 2013.

Dates: Monday, September 30 through Saturday, October 5 2013, full day, starts at 9:15 AM daily. Since October 3 is a public holiday, no astro-lab will be held on that day.

  • Procedure: There is no special preparation for the astro-lab required. During the one-week astro-lab about 4-5, during the 2-week astro-lab about 9-10 tasks shall be worked on in groups of two (scripts will be given on site). Individual tasks will be assigned by the organizers. Once a task is completed by an individual group, it will be discussed with one of the responsible assistants. There is no need for a written summary or any homework.

  • Literature: It would be useful to bring your own textbooks, e.g.
    • Schneider: Extragalactic astronomy and cosmology
    • Shu: The Physical Universe, University Science Books

  • Also useful (but not a requirement): Bring your own notebook for working on the tasks and/or searches in the internet (WLAN/DHCP available).

The next astro-lab will take place from Feb 11 - 22 2013.
