 How to get to LSW

Diploma/Master/PhD Thesis Projects Available

Astrometry

October 2010:
We offer a PhD position in the framework of our ongoing PRIMA (phase-referenced interferometry with microarcsecond astrometry) project. Our group at the Landessternwarte is part of an international consortium which has built differential delay lines (a subsystem of the PRIMA instrument, located on Paranal in Chile). Another deliverable will the astrometric software package with which PRIMA observations can be reduced. In turn, the consortium gets from ESO guaranteed observing time to carry out an astrometric exoplanet search program with PRIMA, probably starting in 2011.
The successful candidate will be involved in the commissioning of the PRIMA instrument and the astrometric software and the preparation and execution of the astrometric planet search program.
The Landessternwarte has a PhD exchange program with the Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile (PUC). The successful candidate will thus spend at least one year at PUC in Chile (with frequent trips to Paranal), and the other two years or so at the LSW in Heidelberg.
Applications are invited at the contact addresses below. Review of applications will start immediately until the position is filled.

October 2010:
We are looking for a diploma/bachelor/master student to work on binary stars in the Orion Nebula Cluster.
