News from the Galactic archaeology group

15-Jan-2012 Terese Hansen joins our group as a PhD student under the supervision of N Christlieb and C. Hansen. She will work on the determination of chemical abundances in a sample of extremely metal poor stars.

23-Nov-11 Jing Ren has published her first refereed paper: "The Hamburg/ESO R-process Enhanced Star survey (HERES). VII. Thorium abundances in metal-poor stars", get the PDF of the preprint here.. Congratulations, Jing!

12-Sep-11 Today, Nikolay Kacharov started his PhD with our group. He will work on chemical analysis of stars in Globular Clusters, supervised by Andreas Koch. Welcome to Heidelberg, the ZAH, the Landessternwarte, and in our group, Nikolay!

01-Sep-11 Elisabetta has published a striking result on the extremely metal-poor, low-mass star SDSS J102915+172927 in a Letter to Nature, see also the News page of the ZAH. Simone Zaggia, one of the Letter's co-authors, created a nice animation (50 Mb!) showing how the star is moving within the Milky Way.

01-Sep-11 Today, Pier-Emmanuel Tremblay - a Humboldt Fellow - is starting working in our group. He will work on white dwarf atmospheres, and aspects related to Galactic structure. Welcome to Heidelberg, the ZAH, the Landessternwarte, and in our group, Pier-Emmanuel!

15-Jun-11 Today Luca Sbordone starting working in our group. He will be working on the automatic analysis of spectra in the Spectral Analysis Competence Center of the Collaborative Research Center (SFB) 881. Welcome in Heidelberg, in the SFB, at the ZAH, the Landessternwarte, and in our group, Luca!

01-Apr-11 Today Camilla Hansen starting working in our group (this is not an April Fool's joke!). She will be responsible for the Spectral Analysis Competence Center of the newly-established Collaborative Research Center (SFB) 881. Welcome in Heidelberg, in the SFB, at the ZAH, the Landessternwarte, and in our group, Camilla!

10-Feb-11 Norbert is a Kingsley Visitor at the Caltech Astronomy Department from today for one month.

01-Jan-11 A postdoc position is available in our group immediately. The ad is here; more information on the position can be found here.

30-Dec-10 Norbert successfully passed the tractor driving examination and is now permitted to operate the observatory tractor together with its snow blower :) According to the weather forecast, there will soon be a lot of demand for these kind of skills...

17-Dec-10 Today Seyma submitted her first paper to a refereed journal. The title is "Abundance analysis of the outer halo globular cluster Palomar 14", and she submitted it to A&A. Congratulations!

28-Nov-10 Hans gives an invited talk at the 4th CoRoT Brazil Workshop this week.

16-Nov-10 The DFG has approved the new Sonderforschungsbereich 881 "The Milky Way System" (see press release of the DFG). Our group is leading the subproject "The most metal-poor stars of the Galaxy", and we are involved in two more subprojects. A number of PhD and postdoc positions will be available already from 1 January 2011.

01-Sep-10 Today Elisabetta Caffau starts working in our group as a Gliese Fellow. Welcome in Heidelberg and at the ZAH, Elisabetta!

25-Jul-10 Visitors this week: Simon Schuler from NOAO, Vidas Dobrovolskas and Augustinas Ivanauskas from Vilnius, and Paula Jofre Pfeil from MPA (Garching).

19-Jul-10 This week, the conference Nuclei in the Cosmos XI takes place in the Stadthalle. Norbert is one of the organizers, and all members of the group help in various ways to make this a successful event.

13-Jul-10 Prof. Zhao Miaogen, the German Deputy Director of the Sino-German Center for Research Promotion, is visiting us today.

05-Jul-10 Vinicius Placco from São Paulo is visiting us for two weeks to work on the selection of carbon-enhanced metal-poor stars in the Hamburg/ESO survey. Welcome back in Heidelberg, Vini!

02-Jul-10 Fernanda Nieva (MPA) and Norbert Przybilla (Bamberg) are visiting us today. Fernanda will give a talk in the MPIA & LSW Hauskolloquium.

17-May-10 University Distinguished Professor and Humboldt Awardee Prof. Timothy Beers of Michigan State University, East Lansing, USA, will be visiting us for three months every year during the next four years. He arrived in Heidelberg today. We are looking forward to working with you, Tim!

10-May-10 Norbert is attending the conference The Chemical Enrichment of the Milky Way Galaxy at Ringberg Castle this week.

18-Apr-10 Haining started working on the next project of her PhD, namely the determination of fluorine abundances of a sample of metal-poor stars based on VLT/CRIRES spectra.

17-Apr-10 Hans is in Tübingen today to give a talk in the Astrophysical Colloquium of the University.

16-Apr-10 Haining finished her paper on the metallicity distribution function of the Galactic halo, determined with metal-poor turnoff stars from the Hamburg/ESO survey. She submitted the paper to A&A today. This is her first paper submitted to a refereed journal. Congratulations!

14-Apr-10 Norbert was awarded the Kingsley Visitorship of the Caltech Astronomy Faculty. He will be staying in Pasedena for four weeks in spring 2011.

13-Apr-10 Elisabetta Caffau, who will be joining us from September 2010 as a Gliese Fellow, visits our group this week. We are looking forward to discussing current and future projects on abundance analyses of metal-poor stars and the Sun with her.
