LBT - Science with the Large Binocular Telescope
Splinter Meeting of the
AG Tagung 2012
September 27 & 28, 2.15 - 6.15pm
Rationale
Following its first monocular light in October 2005 and its first binocular
light in February 2008, the Large Binocular Telescope went into scientific operation
in March 2008. It nowadays hosts three powerful instruments with unique capabilities
operating in the optical and near-infrared. More advanced instruments will be
offered in the next years which will than deliver exiting science using true
binocular observing. In spite of its youth it has already delivered spectacular
results, in particular due to its ground breaking adaptive optics technology.
25% of the telescope time is granted to a consortium of 5 German institutes.
As compensation for funding by PT-DESY to develop instruments for the telescope,
some nights are available for the German community in general.
The scope of this splinter session is to bring together instrument builders for
the LBT as well as expert users and potential future users. Topics to be discussed
include the current state of the observatory, its future development, scientific
results achieved by the German consortium as well as the German community so far
and directions on how it can be used by the German community. It may also include
a section on the tools available for its use and to optimize the scientific return.
Outline of the splinter meeting
The splinter meetings will be held during two afternoon sessions on Thursday, September 27 and
Friday, September 28 and will last from 2.15 - 6.15pm each. The first session on
Thursday will mainly focus on the present status of the observatory, its instrumentation
with particular emphasis on the contribution by German consortia and in
ways to use it. The Friday session is devoted mainly to scientific results achieved by German astronomers.
Confirmed speakers include:
